Understanding and Organizing Your ISI Directory

The directory in ISI Analytics is the foundation of your reporting. It defines how people, devices, and activity are grouped and displayed across reports and dashboards.

A key part of the directory is organizations (your hierarchy), which determines how data is structured and aggregated. Setting up and maintaining a clear organization structure ensures your reports accurately reflect your business.

Accessing the Directory #

  1. Navigate to the Infortel Classic dashboard.
  2. Select the Administration button at the top of the page.
  3. Select Directory from the resulting dropdown menu.

From here, you can manage organizations, update records, and configure directory imports.

What are Organizations? #

Organizations represent the hierarchical structure within your directory. They group people and objects into logical categories such as locations, departments, or business units. This structure acts as the framework for how data is categorized and viewed throughout ISI Analytics.

How Organizations Impact Reporting  #

  • Roll up data at different levels (such as by Cost Center, Division, or Department).
  • Filter reports more effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensure people and activity are assigned to the correct groups.

If your directory is unorganized or inconsistent, reports may show duplicate or fragmented data, be harder to interpret, or misrepresent your organization.

Best Practices for Organizing Your Directory #

Connect to a Supported Automated Directory Source: Avoiding duplicative tasks can help maintain a clear, consistent, and accurate directory. See our Supported Directory Sources for automating your Directory updates.

Start with a Clear Structure: Define your hierarchy before adding or importing data. Common approaches include organizing by location, department, or a combination of both. For most automated sources, ISI can accept up to 4 organization levels.

Keep the Hierarchy Simple: Limit unnecessary levels and keep navigation intuitive, so reporting remains clear and easy to use.

Use Consistent Naming: Use clear, descriptive names and apply the same format across all entries. Avoid abbreviations or special characters unless they are widely understood across your organization.

Avoid Duplicate Organizations: Check before creating new entries and regularly review your directory to prevent duplicates or overlapping structures.

Align Imports with Your Structure: Ensure import files match your intended hierarchy, and that naming is standardized before importing data.

Maintain Over Time: Regularly review and update your directory, so it stays aligned with changes in your organization.

Structured Layout Example #

This example uses 3 organization levels: Company, Division, Department. This structure provides a clean breakdown for reporting on people residing within the departments of the Chicago Division.
